This September marks a significant milestone for the SPS Group as it celebrates a quarter-century of business operations.

Originating in Hull, the company was initially established as SPS Security in 1992, with ICS Cleaning merging into the fold by 1995. This merger was the brainchild of Tony Beharrell, the Group’s Chairman, and Christine Turner, the Managing Director of ICS Cleaning. Having operated their respective Hull-based businesses independently, they recognised the mutual benefits of combining their efforts to forge a stronger enterprise.

By 1998, the fusion of these entities gave birth to the SPS Group, which was further expanded in 2008 to include SPS Technical in its offerings. From its inception as a family-run venture 25 years ago, the organisation has maintained its familial ethos up to the present day in 2017.

The company is currently organised into four primary divisions: ICS Cleaning, SPS Technical, SPS Security, and SPS Training, collectively employing over 850 individuals across numerous contracts in the North of England, including 30 staff members stationed at its headquarters in Neptune House, Hull.

John Beharrell, the Managing Director of SPS Security and son of Tony Beharrell, stated, “Since our inception, we have established a robust financial base and evolved into a facilities management provider that balances scale with a personalised touch, capable of delivering comprehensive solutions while maintaining a commitment to quality and client care.”

In commemoration of this 25-year landmark, the headquarters at Neptune House underwent significant renovations.

Chris Turner, Managing Director of ICS Cleaning, expressed, “Our pride in our Hull origin runs deep, and we continue to operate as a family-centric business, with a focus on cultivating strong internal and client relationships. Our ethos is centred on mutual trust, open communication, and continuous improvement, driven by a passion for customer satisfaction and a commitment to excellence.”

The group prioritises careful recruitment and comprehensive training for its staff, a strategy that has contributed to its sustained success and low turnover rate.

Tracey Wood, a founding employee who began as a cleaner and has since ascended to Operations Director for ICS Cleaning, embodies the company’s ethos of nurturing and promoting talent from within.

“I embarked on my journey with the company from its inception, starting as a young school leaver,” Tracey shared. “Over the years, I’ve had the opportunity to grow with the business, transitioning from hands-on cleaning to strategic operational management, and I’m proud of our evolution and adaptability in the industry.”

Leanne Harper’s narrative further illustrates the company’s supportive culture. Joining SPS nine years ago as an administration temp, she has since become the Control Room Supervisor, exemplifying the company’s commitment to employee development and career progression.

“From a temporary role to overseeing the Control Room nearly a decade later, it’s been rewarding to be part of a team that’s focused on delivering superior service every day,” Leanne remarked.

Now, with 25 years of experience, the SPS Group stands as a robust provider of bespoke security, cleaning, and training solutions in the North of England, supported by its 24-hour control room in Hull and a network of regional offices that enhance its operational reach and effectiveness.
